This and That

Posted by batik bagoes

Hubby and I are both in vacation mode and the list is getting shorter and shorter on things left to do. We've got all our clothes lined out for the trip as well as paid for everything except what we do on the ship and during our excursions. I'm getting pretty close to getting the suitcases down and start packing.

Our son and granddaughter will be house sitting while we are gone because someone has to make sure our Little Bit is happy. We can't put her in a kennel as she won't eat and she's just too old for that kind of trauma. She is sad when we are gone, but she knows if she is home then we will return. It's been working fine for some years now. We also got her a dog house as our son will be working during the day and that means Little Bit will be in the back yard. Hubby has been training her to get into and out of the doghouse and she's doing well. It will keep her warmer and she'll have her bed with all her doggie smells to comfort her. What we won't do for our babies.

We have 12 more days until our cruise and to say I'm not excited would be a big fib. I'm so looking forward to all the things Carnival Spirit has to offer. We had a fabulous time last year cruising to the Caribbean on the Carnival Glory with our blogging buddies and I sure wish that whole crowd was cruising with us to Hawaii.

Next Friday we are going to have television again after many years with no television. It's the new U-family from AT&T and it's all fiber optics. This is a bundle with Internet, television and phone service. What is really cool is we are going from DSL at 6 MBPS to fiber optics at 12 MBPS. Wow, twice as fast? I can't wait for that. Television? Not so much but hubby will enjoy that.

We are spending this weekend at home and have a family get together on Sunday. Next weekend we'll be boating for our regular January yacht club meeting Saturday night and then a board meeting on Sunday morning. Then it's home and do the last minute things before we leave on Thursday the 18th and head for San Diego, California. I. Can't. Wait!

This 'n' That

Today I woke up as staff commodore as last night I was relieved of my duties as commodore during our annual Change of Watch ceremony. It's a great feeling to have made it through all the working chairs unscathed. Our club is fiscally sound (one of my biggest goals) and I'm smiling from ear to ear.

This little gal is my great grand-baby Audi. She visited us for Thanksgiving dinner and I loved on her as much as I could (which was a lot). She is fascinated with our dog Little Bit.

Audi is walking now and it's adorable. She has a great big smile that makes everyone smile. She's the perfect great grand-baby. Well for hubby and I she is.

Have a terrific weekend everyone.

Four Generations

Posted by batik bagoes

On July 7th our family celebrated Sarah's (our granddaughter) 20th birthday. Her favorite food is shrimp and she always wants to go to Red Lobster. So Red Lobster it was. After we finished dinner hubby wanted a picture of the four generations in attendance. So here we are.

Left to right: Sarah (20), my son Richard (40), me (I'll be 60 in September) and baby Audi at the ripe old age of 7 months on July 27th. And yes I hogged the baby all evening long. That's what great grandmas do. She got about a million kisses all over that sweet little face. Life is good!

Sunday Dinner

The best laid plans don't always work out. Today was going to be the day that our family got together for a big BBQ rib feed. Hubby was going to fix the ribs in what he terms low and slow (low heat for a long time) and I was going to make homemade potato salad, along with asparagus and my famous garlic French bread. Hubby was going to make everyone's favorite dessert. That is what was going to be.

On Friday afternoon hubby was sounding pretty rough. He felt okay, but his throat was scratchy and he was coughing here and there. Just before bed we both knew he had a cold. Sure enough we got up Saturday morning and he sounded even worse. So I called off our Sunday afternoon feed. It was to be the first time we've seen our great grand baby since she and her mom were released from the hospital. Oh well, what can you do.

Yesterday, before hubby felt under the weather, we went to Babies 'R' Us and got Audi Lynn a bassinet for our home. Our granddaughter, her significant other and baby Audi Lynn are house sitting for us while we're on our cruise next month and they needed something portable for her to sleep in while we are gone. We had fun finding the cutest one we could find with all the bedding. I was hoping they would get to see it today, but that will have to wait for another time.

I'm getting really excited about our cruise on the BC4 and have pretty much everything done for that trip. I'll be getting to meet bloggers that I've known for a very long time. Empress Bee and Sarge Charlie, Barb and Linda (we've met Linda), and Sandy and Dick. Sandy has warned me that she's going to squeeze the stuffing out of me. I'll let you know how that goes.

For Linda who hasn't a clue what islands we are going to see here's the list. Let the folks at work know where you will be and what day. Just saying...

Sunday, February 27, 2011 - Miami, Florida
Monday, February 28, 2011 - Nassau, Bahamas
Tuesday, March 1, 2011 - Fun Day At Sea
Wednesday, March 2, 2011 - St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Thursday, March 3, 2011 -San Juan, Puerto Rico
Friday, March 4, 2011 - Grand Turk, Turks And Caicos
Saturday, March 5, 2011 - Fun Day At Sea
Sunday, March 6, 2011 - Miami, Florida

Now I just hope I'm not the next one to get sick. Sigh! Well I guess it's better to get sick now than on the cruise. Have a great Sunday everyone.

Dangerous Dan McGrew

Posted by batik bagoes

A bunch of the boys were whooping it up in the Malamute saloon;
The kid that handles the music-box was hitting a jag-time tune;
Back of the bar, in a solo game, sat Dangerous Dan McGrew,
And watching his luck was his light-o'-love, the lady that's known as Lou.

When out of the night, which was fifty below, and into the din and the glare,
There stumbled a miner fresh from the creeks, dog-dirty, and loaded for bear.
He looked like a man with a foot in the grave and scarcely the strength of a louse,
Yet he tilted a poke of dust on the bar, and he called for drinks for the house.
There was none could place the stranger's face, though we searched ourselves for a clue;
But we drank his health, and the last to drink was Dangerous Dan McGrew.

There's men that somehow just grip your eyes, and hold them hard like a spell;
And such was he, and he looked to me like a man who had lived in hell;
With a face most hair, and the dreary stare of a dog whose day is done,
As he watered the green stuff in his glass, and the drops fell one by one.
Then I got to figgering who he was, and wondering what he'd do,
And I turned my head -- and there watching him was the lady that's known as Lou.

His eyes went rubbering round the room, and he seemed in a kind of daze,
Till at last that old piano fell in the way of his wandering gaze.
The rag-time kid was having a drink; there was no one else on the stool,
So the stranger stumbles across the room, and flops down there like a fool.
In a buckskin shirt that was glazed with dirt he sat, and I saw him sway;
Then he clutched the keys with his talon hands -- my God! but that man could play.

Were you ever out in the Great Alone, when the moon was awful clear,
And the icy mountains hemmed you in with a silence you most could HEAR;
With only the howl of a timber wolf, and you camped there in the cold,
A half-dead thing in a stark, dead world, clean mad for the muck called gold;
While high overhead, green, yellow and red, the North Lights swept in bars? --
Then you've a haunch what the music meant . . . hunger and night and the stars.

And hunger not of the belly kind, that's banished with bacon and beans,
But the gnawing hunger of lonely men for a home and all that it means;
For a fireside far from the cares that are, four walls and a roof above;
But oh! so cramful of cosy joy, and crowned with a woman's love --
A woman dearer than all the world, and true as Heaven is true --
(God! how ghastly she looks through her rouge, -- the lady that's known as Lou.)

Then on a sudden the music changed, so soft that you scarce could hear;
But you felt that your life had been looted clean of all that it once held dear;
That someone had stolen the woman you loved; that her love was a devil's lie;
That your guts were gone, and the best for you was to crawl away and die.
'Twas the crowning cry of a heart's despair, and it thrilled you through and through --
"I guess I'll make it a spread misere," said Dangerous Dan McGrew.

The music almost died away . . . then it burst like a pent-up flood;
And it seemed to say, "Repay, repay," and my eyes were blind with blood.
The thought came back of an ancient wrong, and it stung like a frozen lash,
And the lust awoke to kill, to kill . . . then the music stopped with a crash,
And the stranger turned, and his eyes they burned in a most peculiar way;

In a buckskin shirt that was glazed with dirt he sat, and I saw him sway;
Then his lips went in in a kind of grin, and he spoke, and his voice was calm,
And "Boys," says he, "you don't know me, and none of you care a damn;
But I want to state, and my words are straight, and I'll bet my poke they're true,
That one of you is a hound of hell . . . and that one is Dan McGrew."

Then I ducked my head, and the lights went out, and two guns blazed in the dark,
And a woman screamed, and the lights went up, and two men lay stiff and stark.
Pitched on his head, and pumped full of lead, was Dangerous Dan McGrew,
While the man from the creeks lay clutched to the breast of the lady that's known as Lou.

These are the simple facts of the case, and I guess I ought to know.
They say that the stranger was crazed with "hooch", and I'm not denying it's so.
I'm not so wise as the lawyer guys, but strictly between us two --
The woman that kissed him and -- pinched his poke -- was the lady that's known as Lou.

Audi Lynn

Posted by batik bagoes

On December 26th our granddaughter called us around 8:30 pm to inform us that she was in labor. She had only dilated 1 centimeter so there was a long way to go. We told her to call us in the morning with either the news that the new baby had arrived or she was still in labor.

She called the next morning and she was still in labor. She was now dilated 2 centimeters. We told her we would get around and be at the hospital as soon as possible. We did the running around that had to be done and got to the hospital in the early afternoon. At that point she was dilated to 3 centimeters. Progress. We settled in for the long haul and waited.

The doctor came in around 3 in the afternoon and after his examination she was dilated to 3.5 centimeters. Around 6 in the evening the doctor came in and checked her again and she was still at 3.5 centimeters. Her monitor showed that she had quit having contractions. The doctors recommendation was a C-Section. He was sure that she wasn't going to have the baby in the usual way. Their decision to make and within about 30 minutes they decided to follow the doctors recommendation. Better to get the C-Section than wait for an emergency and that would have happened at some point.

The doctor checked her again just before surgery and she was still at 3.5 centimeters. Shortly before 10 pm they wheeled Sarah away and into the delivery room. Shortly after 10 the brand new father came and got us so we could go see the baby in the nursery. They were doing all kinds of tests and Audi was screaming her little head off. She's got a great set of lungs. Daddy stayed in the nursery talking to Audi and also helped in giving her her first bath, along with putting on her very first diaper. I'm so proud of that young man. No doubt these two young folks are going to be great parents.

In the picture above you can see my head on the left of the picture and the grandmother on the right of the picture. It was pretty tough prying us away from that window. I got to see mother and baby in the recovery room just before we headed home (around 12:30am). A long day that ended well.

Today great grandpa and I went back to the hospital to see Sarah and the new baby. I of course held the baby the entire time. She's just got to be the cutest baby on the planet. Her daddy thinks so too. The circle of life, it's a beautiful thing.

A Day of Peace

Posted by batik bagoes

I hope all of my readers had a wonderful Christmas day, well if you celebrate Christmas that is. Many of you remember my not so fun Thanksgiving, and for those that don't you can read about it HERE. We weren't going to do Christmas dinner at all but decided not to penalize the rest of the family for the actions of one. Well that and many of you weighed in on why we should do Christmas. We are so happy we listened to you and decided to host Christmas dinner.

We had our son and two granddaughters and our oldest granddaughters beau. We had a terrific, peaceful day of them playing poker while we cooked and then we had a great meal of fillet roast, potatoes and gravy, dressing, fresh asparagus and fresh baked bread. We then watched a terrific movie called Inception. If you've not seen this movie you should. It is a bit long, but kept all of us on the edge of our seats. Go HERE to watch the trailer.

We then had our choice of pumpkin pie, cherry pie or cheesecake with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Some had a little of each. Now you're talking. After that everyone moved on to the next event of their day. It was truly a very special day for hubby and I. A day without drama is an excellent day indeed. Now we are just waiting for the phone call from the oldest granddaughter telling us to show up at the hospital as the baby is on the way. We are going to be great grandparents. Wonderful.
